FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April, 12 2017 (Mesa, Arizona) –
Stadium Super Trucks Driver Gavin Harlien rolled up to the 2017 Long Beach Grand Prix beaming with confidence. He has had success in past events at this track, and in fact, success with little seat time behind the wheel of the V8 powered Stadium Super Trucks (SST). During the 2015 Long Beach Race, Harlien was able to lead 9 of the 12 laps in the SST Truck, but made a last lap error and ended up finishing in an honest 6th place. Harlien had a whole new game in mind for this go-around and successfully pulled off back-to-back podium finishes.
Gavin, at 17 years old, is fully dedicated and running the entire 2017 SST season. With multiple race weekends already under his belt and zero distractions, Harlien’s focused determination is razor sharp.
Friday morning’s practice went well, but not as great as he had hoped for. After sitting 3rd for most of the 6 lap session, Harlien was able to finish up a solid 6th overall during the weekend’s one and only practice/qualifying session.
The 12 truck field would be inverted and Harlien would start Saturday’s main event in P7. In front of a standing room only crowd, Gavin began the race and made quick work of the competitors, taking the 2nd place position by lap 4. Harlien was able to hold that position for most of the race until the final laps. Indy 500 driver, Mattey Brahbam made a bold pass moving Harlien into the 3rd position. Protecting the final podium position, Gavin now had NASCAR, INDY CAR, and Baja 1000 winner Robby Gordon hot on his tail. He was able to hold off Gordon for the final 3 laps, which in his words; “was a lot of defensive driving”, said Harlien. Gavin came across the finish line in a respectable 3rd place in the #55 Royal Purple Stadium Super Truck on the podium for the first time this season.
After the race Gavin was ecstatic; “I am beyond satisfied with my finish today. Holding off Robby Gordon is something I have had little luck with in the past, so I am feeling pretty great about the race today!”
Royal Purple Stadium Super Truck #55 driver Gavin Harlien was in good spirits Sunday morning as the final race of the weekend came closer. Gavin had his personal mechanic, Clayton Reichard, going through his truck methodically ensuring everything was ready for battle. As Harlien climbed into the driver’s seat, he was determined to put his truck on the box again.
Gavin would be starting way back in the 8th position based on Saturday’s finishing results. SST officials invert the field which moves the top finishers to start in the back. This aspect helps facilitate better racing even though the Stadium Super Trucks tend to be the event highlight.
Because of this, Harlien would have his work cut out for him. Gavin, highly motivated and determined to repeat his success, would not be denied. As the green flag fell, Gavin went to work early and started moving up through the field. On lap 3, Harlien sent the packed crowds of the Long Beach Grand Prix up on their feet as he passed 2 competitors simultaneously down the front straight away. Gavin moved into 3rd place on the next lap with an aggressive move as the roaring Stadium Super Trucks passed by the world famous Long Beach Dolphin Fountain.
Harlien would battle for the lead pressing in on several corners, but could not overtake the top positions. The laps ticked down and the race ended with Gavin finishing in a well earned 3rd place and earning back-to-back podium positions.
“I pushed hard, but I just ran out of laps.” said Harlien. “I know I have the speed to run up front with the fast guys and they better get ready because I’m coming.” Gavin proved he is a threat by running fast, clean, and consistent. The series moves across the globe to Perth Australia next month where Harlien is determined to put his Royal Purple #55 Stadium Super Truck on the top of the box. Gavin wants to thank Royal Purple Lubricants, Stadium Super Trucks, and Molecule Cleaners for giving him the support to race and thrill many thousands of motorsport fans.
